FREE EKG TESTING

Posted by Belen Crew Strong at Jul 9, 2017 4:52PM PDT

Good evening Crew Parents,

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is offering free pediatric electrocardiograms (EKG) testing to middle and high school sports participants. A simple EKG screening can detect heart problems before it’s too late. It is recommended all Belen Crew athletes take advantage of this free screening. Students and families are not obligated in any way to follow up or commit to any future services from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, or its Medical Staff as a result of the free EKG test.

Coach Yunian and staff have agreed to transport any athlete wanting to participate in this free screening on July 12 during Crew practice. Please print and fill out the attached form and submit it to Coach Yunian tomorrow. We encourage all athletes to take advantage of this free service.

2017 BJP Crew Summer Season

Posted by Belen Jesuit Prep Crew at May 30, 2017 9:49AM PDT

Dear Crew Parents,

This Summer season for Belen Jesuit Prep Crew is being offered from July 5th- August 1st from 8am – 5pm to returning Middle and High school rowers interested in maintaining their fitness and perfecting their technique for an improved performance level.

The Summer season for High School rowers will be dedicated to rowing technique, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, as well as racing in 8s, 4s and smaller boats, and regatta preparation. The Program will include seat racing, erg tests, race strategy and coxing.

The Summer season for Middle School rowers will be adapted to meet the physical needs of the rower while challenging them and improving their performance on the water. Middle school rowers will row, erg, receive instruction on technique, and conditioning as well as incorporate other sporting activities to enhance their physical abilities.

All rowers are required to bring their own lunch, snacks, bars, water and beverages daily. It is recommended they apply mosquito repellant and sun block prior to arriving to the lake and reapply during the day.

Royal Canadian Henley Regatta:
High School rowers will have the possibility of participating in the Canadian Royal Henley Regatta at the end of the season for an enhanced racing experience. Only selected athletes will be invited to travel to the Canadian Henley. The Summer season will challenge its participants to train at a high level for top-level competition at the Henley and start the fall season in top physical and technical condition, it being understood however, that the participation of an athlete in the Program is not a pre-requisite to being a member of the team for the regular 2017-18 season. Furthermore, in the event that a selected athlete decides not to participate in the Program, his decision will not hinder the possibility of being selected for top boats during the regular 2017-18 season.

Athletes will be chosen and invited by the second week of the Summer season and are required to decide if they intend to participate in the 135th Canadian Royal Henley Regatta taking place in St. Catharine’s, Ontario, in Canada, from August 6 – 13th. The athletes who commit to practice with the intention of competing at the Royal Henley will be eligible to be selected by the coaches to participate and represent Belen Jesuit Prep Crew at the Royal Henley. Parents/guardians will be required to make all travel and lodging arrangements as well as all payments necessary for the participation of the selected athletes at the Royal Henley, in accordance with the directives that the coaches will timely provide, once the schedule and other relevant information about this regatta are available.

Attached below is the registration form for the Summer Season. Please print and turn in to Coach Yunian. He will be at the school Wednesday afternoon, and after final exams next week. If you have any questions, please call or text Xenia Cabrera at 786-229-9919 or via email at XeniaMCabrera@gmail.com.

We look forward to another wonderful rowing season.

Dear Crew Family,

It is with great pride that we report that two of our seniors have signed letters of intent and will continue to row in college. Jonathan “Stud” Menendez has signed with Georgetown University and Santiago “Santi” Ugas with the University of Delaware!

This year’s signings are even more special as these young men will be joining some of their BJP Crew alumni brothers at their respective new programs. Jonathan will be joining Hector Formoso-Murias ’15 as a Hoya and Santi joins fellow Blue Hens Ben Gilbert ’16 and Christian Burke ’16. What a great legacy for our program!

This accomplishment is also bittersweet for our team, as we bid farewell this year to two families that have given nearly two decades combined of love and service to Belen Crew. All of us on this team don’t know what a regatta is like without a Menendez or Ugas boy racing. We thank them sincerely for all of their support throughout these years.

We are so proud of Jonathan and Santi — their hard work, perseverance and dedication has paid off! We’ll be cheering for you both next year!

Row Belen!

Regarded as the first major regatta of the year, the San Diego Crew Classic brings together thousands of athletes from more than 100 universities, clubs and high school programs from across the United States to participate in this premier rowing event in San Diego. Established in 1973, for many rowers, the Crew Classic is the highlight of their competitive rowing careers and a competition for future Olympians.

Our Lightweight 8+ crew repeated its gold medal performance, winning by open water with a 10 second margin over the silver medalist. This victory once again ranks our team as the #1 lightweight program in the country and positions us as the favorite at the Youth National Championships to take place in June. Belen also holds the distinction of being the only scholastic program to win at this level at this prestigious regatta.

Congratulations to Jonathan Menendez, Carlos Marin, Jorge Garcia-Sarraff, Daniel Giacosa, Rodrigo Marin, Alejandro Pacios, Ivan Cabrera, Hunter Prindle and coxswain Santiago Ugas as well as Head Coach Yunian Cabrera and Asst. Coach Rolando Gamon on a such a dominant performance!
